Canaries for Sale

When looking at canaries for sale, how to tell male from female?

When looking for canaries for sale, one of the most common things people ask whether a canary is male or female.

- Males sing

Often the male of the species sings. This is part of the process to attract the female.

This is not set in stone, however, as hens have been known (although not regularly) to sing.

- Females lay eggs

Although this may appear a straightforward statement, in some animals the males lay the eggs.

- Take them to an avian vet

Vets that specialize in birds are often able to determine the gender of the canary.

If you cannot find an avian vet in your local vicinity, check with a regular vet for a referral - sometimes they will be able to deal with the animal right away, however often they will be able to refer you to the nearest specialist.

Most vets will be able to determine the gender of the bird based on the composition of their droppings. It is advised that you do NOT try to do this type of work at home.

Alternatively, vets can check via DNA tests or surgically.

When looking for canaries for sale, especially with older birds it is always advised to have a vet check them over to ensure that they are in proper health.

- Check near the vent

This method is not foolproof, but it has been known to work.

Blow some air near the canary's vent. The male should have a small dimple like a small swelling near the vent, while the female usually will not.

This method has been known to yield wrong results at times, however.
